As the effects of the coronavirus lockdown continue, employers are tentatively making plans to return to the office. In such a working environment where adjustments and concessions are continually being evaluated, it is more paramount than ever to frequently assess working conditions within institutions and make judgements about personal and mental health in relation to employment. Not only should staff be able to complete their duties to a high standard as valued members of an effective team but they should flourish collectively and individually under workplace conditions. This appreciation should be reflected in salaries, benefits and, most importantly, day-to-day wellbeing. With that in mind, here is a closer look at some of the best companies to work for in IT and why it is important that where you work is healthy.

SAP Software Solutions

SAP Software Solutions was founded in Germany in 1972 and has since developed into a world leader in enterprise software. The company is the largest non-American software company by revenue and the third-largest publicly traded software company in the world. With over 425,000 customers in 180 countries, working at SAP is a great opportunity to be part of something great, expansive and trailblazing. Furthermore, employee testimonies cite a strong learning culture and intelligent colleagues as valuable aspects of the working experience while 97% of reviewers on glassdoor.com approve of the outfit's CEO. By far the most commonly mentioned positive for working at the company is the great pay with excellent benefits for all kinds of workers. They are hiring mainly in the US in the states of California, Pittsburgh and Illinois but the company has corporate offices in Europe and Hong Kong.

AppFolio Property Management

Based in the Santa-Barbara area, AppFolio has been offering software-as-service applications primarily focussing on property management solutions, data analytics and the real estate vertical for over 15 years. In this time, the company has gone from strength to strength culminating in a multimillion-dollar private equity sale, the largest in the organisation's history, in September 2020. This rapid expansion resulted in AppFolio being ranked #1 in Fortune's list of fastest-growing companies in 2020. Aside from the opportunity to work with such an exciting outfit, employees have quoted a great working culture centred around improvement and support throughout the team. Every couple of weeks, there is a team meeting that assesses the previous weeks' achievements and judges how they can be improved; these meetings start with appreciations where team members thank one another for their help and support and praise them for their hard work and commitment. This company is currently hiring in the states of Texas and California but there are offices all over the USA.

Facebook

With the status of one of the most recognisable and widely-used tech brands in the world, it would seem that Facebook could fall into the trap of neglecting employees. However, the truth is quite the opposite. Employees on glassdoor.com approve highly of the CEO whilst commenting on the benefits of being surrounded by talented colleagues and a familial team ethic. Currently, Facebook is focussing their recruitment efforts in California however they have offices in Europe and Asia with a large office in Malaysia.

Microsoft

Much like Facebook, it seems that the success of Microsoft is due in part its great treatment of its workforce. Alongside the great benefits packages offered to its employees, many workers cite the genuine passion of the workforce and the sense of opportunity to instil that passion in the customer as greater reason to work for the organisation. Many workers feel that they are truly helping people by doing what they love. At present, the is company is mainly hiring in California and Washington however their presence is strongly global with offices across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

LinkedIn

Since its launch in 2003, LinkedIn continues to be the leader of its filed and, since being absorbed by Microsoft in 2016, has continued to grow and improve on this status boasting 740 million registered users in 150 countries in February 2021. Being part of such a successful business that provides a useful and high-quality service to many is rewarding enough in itself but employees of the company have been praising the strong opportunities and benefits packages of their careers as well as the pleasant office culture. This company has many job vacancies all over the world with large offices in the US, Europe, South America and Asia with a strong presence in Singapore.

Google

For many, working for Google is the pinnacle of employment in the sector and presents a unique opportunity to learn and improve skills at the cutting edge of modern technology. And employee's attitudes reflect this; out of 19,000 reviews on glassdoor.com, 99% of workers current or previous would recommend the company to a friend and CEO Sundar Pichai has an approval rating of 100%. Also mentioned is the opportunity to solve issues that matter to communities and the world and provide services that make the lives of ordinary people that bit easier. Isn't that what working in IT should be about? Although mainly looking to enhance their staff in California, Google has offices and opportunities all over the globe with strong links to China and Indonesia as well as across Europe.

Hubspot

Based in Massechuessets, Hubspot shot to fame in the last ten years for their notable success as providers of sales and marketing software, an endeavour whose revenues grew from $255,000 to $15.6 million between 2007 and 2010. To this day, their revenue and equity continue to rise and they boast high rates of employee satisfaction. Workers praise the company's approach of staff automatism where employees are in charge of how to prioritise their day to day duties which instil further motivation towards achieving the organisation's overall goals. This in turn allows each and every employee to feel that they have contributed to the success of a project at its completion. Although chiefly hiring in US at present, Hubspot has offices across the globe including in France, India and Singapore.

The benefits of working in an environment that supports and appreciates its employees are immeasurable both for the individual happiness of team members and for their standards of output. According to Bradbury and Lichenstein (2000), work can be useful for individuals in terms of fostering social relationships, engagement and providing a sense of achievement that facilitates a grounded feeling of purpose. Maslach, Schaufeli and Leiter (2001) studied the effects of an absence of support in a poor working environment can have adverse effects, something that psychologists call "burnout"; a state of mind resulting from chronic workplace stress characterised by overwhelming exhaustion, a sense of cynicism. Further research suggests that burnout can, in some cases, lead to depression.

It is crucial that mental health in the workplace is looked after and, at times where it seems as though it isn't, there are places workers can turn for advice. In the UK, ACAS (The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) offers free and impartial advice on workplace rights, rules and practice and can be contacted throughout the working week. They can offer support on contracts, wages, rights and responsibilities, working time and holiday entitlement and issues of inequality in the workplace. The Department of Labor provides a similar service in America. Many industries have unions that will take complaints and support direct action such as strikes so, once employed in the industry, it may be worth investigating the benefits of joining such organisations. Returning to the office post-Covid is an exciting prospect for many; think about your happiness and make sure that your return to an office that values you.
